Biochar, the carbon-rich solid produced by heating biomass under low-oxygen
conditions (pyrolysis), has physical and chemical properties suited to this problem: very
high internal surface area, strong porosity, and an ability to bind ammonia and
ammonium. This document summarizes what on-farm trials, controlled litter studies,
and composting research say about using biochar in poultry houses. It covers three
routes of use, bedding amendment, feed supplement, and litter and compost
additive, and identifies where the evidence is strong, where it is emerging, and what
remains unknown, so growers and technical advisors can match the practice to their
goals.
